AP CSA Practice Tests

Full-length AP Computer Science A multiple-choice practice tests. 42 questions, one at a time, with instant feedback and a breakdown of the essential knowledge you missed.

The multiple-choice section of the AP Computer Science A exam is 42 questions in 90 minutes. That's a little over two minutes per question, and it's the part of the exam where pacing matters as much as knowing the material. These full-length practice tests give you the real thing: 42 questions, in order, with instant feedback after each one.

About the exam

The exam is 3 hours long and has two sections.

Section Question type Questions Time Share of score
I Multiple choice 42 90 minutes 55%
II Free response 4 90 minutes 45%

You are given the Java Quick Reference during the exam. It lists the methods from the Java library that can appear on the test, so you don't need to memorize them. It's worth being comfortable with it before exam day.

The multiple-choice section covers all four units. Roughly:

Unit Share of multiple choice
Unit 1: Using Objects and Methods 15–25%
Unit 2: Selection and Iteration 25–35%
Unit 3: Class Creation 10–18%
Unit 4: Data Collections 30–40%

The four free-response questions are Methods and Control Structures, Class Design, Data Analysis with ArrayList, and 2D Array. The AP CSA free-response walkthroughs on this site cover those.

How these tests work

  • One question at a time, in the same order every time, like the real exam.
  • Check each answer before moving on. You'll see whether you were right and why every choice is right or wrong.
  • Essential knowledge tables. After you check a question, a table lists the essential knowledge (EKS) statements it assessed, linked to the full list at the bottom of the page.
  • Your progress is saved. Answers are stored in your browser as you go, so you can stop and come back later. Numbered boxes above the question let you jump back to anything you've already answered, and Start over clears everything. Nothing is sent to a server, but it also means progress doesn't follow you to a different browser or device.
  • A score at the end. When you finish you get your percentage, and a table showing how many questions you missed for each EKS statement, most-missed first. That table is your study list.

To practice pacing, set a timer for 90 minutes before you start. If you'd rather work on one area at a time, the topic-by-topic practice sets give you five random questions from each group of topics.
