Final Grade Calculator

What do I need to make on my final to get an A this semester? This final grade calculator will tell you.

What do I need to make on my final? That's the question going through students' heads as finals approach. Enter your current average, the grade you want for the semester, and the weight of the final exam, and this calculator will tell you what you need to score.

You need to score at least

on the final exam.

What about doing it yourself?

If you'd rather do the math yourself, here's the formula that this calculator uses.

\[\frac{100 \times \text{goal} - (100 - \text{final weight}) \times \text{current grade}}{\text{final weight}} = \text{final grade}\]

So, let's look at the default values above. You've got a 90%, want to score at least 89.5% for the semester, and your final is worth 25% of your semester average.

\[\begin{align} \frac{100 \times 89.5 - (100 - 25) \times 90}{25} &= \\ \frac{100 \times 89.5 - 75 \times 90}{25} &= \\ \frac{8950 - 6750}{25} &= \\ \frac{2200}{25} &= 88 \end{align}\]

There you go — you need to score an 88% on your final exam to keep your 90 average. Now you can go back and fill in your actual values above and see what you need, instead of doing the math by hand.

Teachers?

If your students are asking what they need to make on their final exams — and they probably are — you can point them to this page and let them find their own answer, or hand them the formula above and let them work it out themselves.
